Whimsical Children’s Books

Is This Right?

Paul Magnuson

Emmaloo, at 4 years old, knows how to do things not quite right to get some attention and have a good laugh. Her parents are exhausted by the end of the day … and loving (almost) every minute of it. Coming in 2022. The photo is from my original drawing of the book as a present to my own dear Emma.

The Industrious Sloth

Paul Magnuson

Victoria is industri… (shh! don’t say that word around a bunch of sloths!) Anyway, Victoria moves into a new neighborhood and struggles a bit to fit in, like many of us do. She learns with time to compromise with her classmates and school teachers. Illustrator Fangming Zhou drew Victoria and her new friends while a ninth grade student at Leysin American School. She is now a senior in high school in her native country of China.

Boa Constrictors Tie the Knot

Paul Magnuson

Lucy Davis, the illustrator of this story, self-published this book with me several years ago. I’m going to link a pdf here if Victoria, the Industrious Sloth, can find time in her busy schedule to help me.

Educator and Author

I attribute much of my innovation in teaching and learning to 20 years of summer camp experience. Never underestimate the power of learning when unfettered from “regular” school! Years of experience in school improvement with US federal education programs, coupled with classroom teaching from elementary through graduate school (e.g. world languages, ESL, music, teaching licensure, applied linguistics, and leadership) bring both perspective and depth.

Since 2008 I’ve held several roles at Leysin American School, including middle school and summer school leadership, accreditation systems, curriculum development, and professional development through action research.

I hold a PhD in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Minnesota, a ScrumMaster certification in Agility, and an eight year hobby of language learning with Duolingo, whom I met once in person. Well, more like in owl, if you see what I mean.

Student agency, pulling agile into education, innovative teaching and learning

Workshops and Consulting

In addition to whimsical stories for children, I like to share a bit of whimsy with innovative teachers working with children.

Innovative Teaching and Learning

I have created and led many virtual and face-to-face workshops about innovative teaching and learning. Let me know if you’d like to talk more about what is possible.

In-house Professional Development

Over the past 10 years I’ve developed a research center at my own school. There are several advantages to supporting pd from within: it is cheaper, it is ongoing, it is classroom situated, and it is relevant.

EDgility - Pulling agile into education

Agile Educator Certification (ACE). I have been working with a group of agile educators for over a year to create ACE with Scrum Alliance. Agile classrooms grow student agency, promote self-directed habits of learning, and give teachers the time for lots of informal formative feedback, one-to-one and with small groups.
